The test
How to read each question: first the wording in French, exactly as it appears on our platform, then its English translation just below. Choose your answer before you look at the correction, then read the explanation, even when you got it right.
Why French first? Our course, our student area and our mock exams are in French. Reading the French wording now helps you recognise the key terms (commune, Chambre des députés, Conseil d’État) whenever you meet them.
Question 1 · Fundamental rights
A professional journalist is heard as a witness by a judge in a criminal case. What does the law on freedom of expression in the media in principle allow him to do?
Answer C. The law protects sources: a journalist heard as a witness may refuse to disclose information identifying his source, subject to exceptions (notably terrorism or threats to State security). This protection does not allow him to refuse to testify on all the facts.
Question 2 · Fundamental rights
Charged with theft by the investigating judge, Marc is remanded in custody. A newspaper is already calling him “the thief”. According to the Constitution, until when is Marc presumed innocent?
Answer C. Article 17 of the Constitution provides that anyone accused of an offence is presumed innocent until their guilt has been legally established. Being charged, remanded in custody or sent to trial are only stages of the procedure: they do not reverse this presumption.
Question 3 · Fundamental rights
Lukas, 18, has finished secondary school in Luxembourg and wants to study medicine in Belgium. What does the Constitution provide?
Answer C. The Constitution provides that everyone is free to study in Luxembourg or abroad and to attend the universities of their choice. It requires no ministerial consent and sets no condition linked to the courses offered in Luxembourg.
Question 4 · Institutions
The Government has just tabled a housing bill in the Chamber. Who decides to refer it to one or more parliamentary committees?
Answer A. The Conference of Presidents refers the bill to committee; the committee then appoints a rapporteur. The Council of State gives an opinion on the text, but it does not organise the Chamber’s work.
Question 5 · Institutions
While visiting Echternach, Paulo sees smoke coming from a neighbouring house. Which free number does he dial to alert the fire brigade?
Answer C. 112, free and available 24 hours a day, alerts the CGDIS for the fire brigade and ambulances. 113 is the emergency number of the Grand Ducal Police.
Question 6 · Institutions
The police pass on to the prosecution a complaint about a theft of low value. The prosecutor decides to drop the case. On which principle does he rely?
Answer D. The prosecution decides what action to take on complaints according to the principle of discretionary prosecution (opportunité des poursuites): it judges whether to prosecute or to drop the case. The principle of mandatory prosecution, applied in other countries, would oblige it to prosecute every reported offence.
Question 7 · Institutions
Kofi works shifts and cannot attend the sessions of the 'Living together' course. How can he meet this naturalisation requirement?
Answer C. The requirement is met either by attending the 24-hour course or by passing the exam on its subjects; registration is free in both cases. There is no exemption fee and no equivalence through a foreign qualification.
Question 8 · History and Europe
After 1867, two of Luxembourg's neighbours go to war with each other. What stance does the Treaty of London then require of the Grand Duchy?
Answer A. The 1867 Treaty of London declared the Grand Duchy perpetually neutral, under the protection of the signatory powers. It also required the Prussian garrison to leave, so it could not come back.
Question 9 · History and Europe
On 31 August 1942, workers in Wiltz and Schifflange stop work and the strike spreads across the country. Which announcement made the day before are they reacting to?
Answer A. On 30 August 1942, Gauleiter Gustav Simon announced compulsory military service for young people born between 1920 and 1924; the next day, strikes broke out, notably in Wiltz and Schifflange. The ban on French and the abolition of the institutions dated from 1940, the census from 1941.
Question 10 · History and Europe
Restored in 2025, the former vessel 'Princesse Marie-Astrid' now serves as a living European memorial on the Moselle. Why this vessel?
Answer A. The Schengen Agreement was signed on 14 June 1985 aboard the ‘Princesse Marie-Astrid’, moored on the Moselle at Schengen; bought back in 2021, the ship became a European memorial. The Benelux convention was signed in London in 1944 and the 1966 compromise in Luxembourg.

Your score
Ten questions give you a first idea, not a forecast. The exam pass mark is not published on the pages we consulted. For practice, we aim for 70%, i.e. 7 right answers out of 10.
You have solid foundations. Check them on a full 40-question mock exam, with the timer.
You reach our practice threshold. Work on the area where you made your mistakes.
The basics are there, but some precise facts are missing. Start with institutions: 20 questions out of 40 in the exam.
That is normal at the beginning. Take the lessons in the order of the syllabus (in French), then take a test again.
Read the explanation even when you got it right. It helps you remember the fact and spot the trap next time.
