The Sproochentest explained, from registration to result.
The Sproochentest is the Luxembourgish language test required for nationality by naturalisation. A speaking test at level A2, a listening test at level B1, a 4-criterion marking grid and a 50% rule: here is everything you need to know, with sources. Who it concerns
Who is the Sproochentest for?
The Sproochentest is the assessment of spoken Luxembourgish. It is organised by the Institut national des langues Luxembourg (INLL). According to the INLL’s Sproochentest page, it is only for people covered by Article 14 of the Law of 8 March 2017 on Luxembourgish nationality: in practice, candidates for naturalisation and some option cases.
To be naturalised, you must among other things be an adult, have lived legally in Luxembourg for at least 5 years (the last year without interruption), pass the Sproochentest and attend the course or pass the Vivre ensemble exam. The full process is on our Luxembourgish nationality page (in French).
Two points worth knowing, from the INLL FAQ: the Sproochentest is the only certification recognised for the nationality application, and the Luxembourgish test taken to join the civil service does not exempt you from it. Your level in English, French or German does not replace it either.
Exemptions: a medical exemption can be requested from the Minister of Justice, with a certificate from a medical specialist. After at least 20 years of legal residence, the option route requires a 24-hour Luxembourgish course instead (source: Guichet.lu).
Communication is what counts
The INLL describes what is expected: range, fluency, clarity, grammatical structures, coherence, making yourself understood and interaction. Not perfect Luxembourgish.
The 2 parts
How the Sproochentest works
Speaking and listening take place on the same day, within half a day, at an INLL centre.
Speaking
Part 1, the interview (5 min). The examiner offers you 2 everyday topics (work, family, free time…). You choose 1 and answer their questions. Examples published by the INLL: « Film an Televisioun », « Schlof an Entspanung », « Fester » (film and television, sleep and relaxation, celebrations).
Part 2, the photo (5 min). You are offered 3 photos. You choose 1 and describe it: the situation, the activities, the people.
Two examiners are present: one leads the interview, the other observes and marks.
Listening
You listen to 3 recordings in Luxembourgish:
1. a message or a piece of information on the radio;
2. an everyday conversation;
3. a discussion or a presentation on a set topic.
After each recording, you tick the right answer on a tablet. According to the INLL’s instructions, the test does not stop once started, you cannot go back, a countdown shows the time left and your answers are saved automatically at the end.
| Part | Level | Format | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speaking, part 1 | A2 | Interview on 1 topic chosen from 2 | 5 min |
| Speaking, part 2 | A2 | Description of 1 photo chosen from 3 | 5 min |
| Listening | B1 | 3 recordings, multiple-choice questions on a tablet | 35 min |
On its Sproochentest page, the INLL publishes sample interviews, photos, and a recording with its answer sheet and answer key. Start there: they show the exact type of questions asked.
Marking
The speaking grid: 4 criteria marked from 0 to 5
According to the assessment grid the INLL publishes with its sample tests, the observing examiner marks 4 criteria.
Vocabulary 0 to 5
A2-level vocabulary, varied and used appropriately.
Morphosyntax 0 to 5
Varied and correct A2 sentence structures: verb forms, word order, agreement.
Phonetics 0 to 5
Speaking clearly and fluently, and being understood.
Task achievement 0 to 5
Answering in the interview, describing the photo, staying coherent.
The 80/20 weighting
The 4 criteria of the observing examiner (the assessor) count for 80% of the speaking mark. The overall assessment of the examiner leading the interview (the interlocutor) counts for 20%.
In practice, task achievement weighs as much as grammar. A simple but complete answer is worth more than an ambitious sentence left unfinished.
The 50% rule
When have you passed the Sproochentest?
According to the INLL and Guichet.lu, you pass in either of these two cases:
- you get at least half the points in speaking;
- your speaking mark is lower, but the average of speaking and listening reaches at least half the points (rounded up to the next whole number where necessary).
Speaking remains the decisive part. A good listening score can make up for a borderline speaking mark, not for a very weak one.
The INLL pages we consulted do not say how long it takes to receive the results.
Passed
44% in speaking and 60% in listening: the average reaches 52%.
Not passed
40% in speaking and 56% in listening: the average stays below 50%.

Method
How to prepare for the Sproochentest
You practise speaking by speaking, and listening by listening. Short, regular sessions work better than long, occasional ones.
Take stock
Try the INLL samples: an interview, a photo, the recording and its answer key. Note what holds you back.
Prepare the topics
For each topic: the present, a memory in the past, your habits, an opinion with ‘because’, your plans.
Listen every day
10 minutes of Luxembourgish is enough. Spot who is speaking, about what, where, when, and the numbers.
Simulate the day
Topic from 2, photo from 3, then timed listening. Record yourself and listen back.
Do not recite a text learned by heart: the examiner asks questions that depend on your answers. If you do not understand, ask them to repeat: « Kënnt Dir dat wannechgelift widderhuelen? » (Could you repeat that, please?)

Speaking lasts 10 minutes (2 × 5 minutes) and listening 35 minutes. Both parts take place on the same day, within half a day.
Can I pass with less than 50% in speaking?
Yes, if the average of speaking and listening reaches at least half the points. Example: 44% in speaking and 60% in listening give 52%.
Do I need to write in Luxembourgish?
No. There is no written test. For listening, you tick your answers on a tablet.
Is there a list of interview topics?
The INLL does not publish a complete list. It mentions everyday topics (work, family, free time…) and publishes a few sample interviews.
Can I retake the test?
Yes. According to the INLL FAQ, there is no limit on the number of registrations, but you can only register again once the results of your previous test are out. Each registration costs €75.
Does the certificate expire?
No. According to the INLL, the certificate is valid indefinitely.
I have a disability: can I get special arrangements?
Yes. Attach a document from a medical authority to your registration. The INLL can provide equipment or assistance from its staff.
Are you linked to the INLL?
No. my-sproochentest is an independent preparation, published by Quartzium Learning Center. For your registration, contact the INLL directly.
While you wait for the opening, prepare the other exam.
Naturalisation also requires Vivre ensemble. Test yourself on 10 questions, in French with an English translation, free and with no sign-up.
