Topic 1

The Sproochentest

The INLL’s Luxembourgish language test. All the details are on the page The Sproochentest explained.

What is the Sproochentest?

The Luxembourgish language test that the Institut national des langues Luxembourg (INLL) organises for nationality. It has a speaking test at level A2 (10 minutes: an interview, then the description of a photo) and a listening test at level B1 (35 minutes, 3 recordings, questions on a tablet).

How do you pass the Sproochentest?

With at least half the points in speaking. Otherwise, you pass if the average of speaking and listening reaches at least half the points, rounded up to the next whole number where necessary (INLL, Guichet.lu).

How much does it cost to register for the Sproochentest?

€75, paid to the INLL when you register on MyINL. Under certain conditions, the Ministry of Justice refunds this fee on request, after you have submitted your nationality application. This amount has nothing to do with the price of our packs.

Where and when does the test take place?

At one of the INLL’s two sites: Luxembourg-Glacis or Belval (Esch-sur-Alzette). Upcoming sessions and their deadlines are on our Sproochentest dates page.

What should I bring on test day?

The original of a valid ID document: identity card, passport, residence permit or travel document. Copies, photos and driving licences are not accepted.

Can I retake the Sproochentest?

Yes. There is no limit on the number of registrations, but you can only register again once the results of your previous test are out. The certificate you obtain is valid indefinitely (INLL FAQ).

Are you linked to the INLL or the State?

No. my-sproochentest is an independent preparation, published by Quartzium Learning Center. Registration for the exams is done only with the INLL and the Ministry of Education.

Topic 2

The Vivre ensemble exam

40 questions on rights, institutions and history. See the Vivre ensemble exam explained.

How does the Vivre ensemble exam work?

40 multiple-choice questions on a computer, in Esch-Belval: 10 on fundamental rights, 20 on State and municipal institutions, 10 on history and European integration (Ministry of Education).

Should I attend the course or take the exam?

One or the other. The certificate is issued after the 24 hours of classes or after passing the exam. Our pack prepares you for the exam.

What is the pass mark?

It is not published on the public pages we consulted. Our mock exams use a practice threshold of 70%, to give you a margin.

How do I register, and how much does it cost?

Online, on the Vivre ensemble platform. Guichet.lu states that registration is free and final.

Are your questions the real exam questions?

No. Nobody publishes the exam questions. Ours cover the same syllabus and are written from the 2023 Constitution, the law and public websites. Each question cites its source.

Who is exempt from the history module?

Holders of a certificate from the civic education classes of the welcome and integration contract, or from a citizenship pact module of at least 6 hours. Careful: if you only take the exam, without attending the modules, this exemption does not apply (Guichet.lu).

Topic 3

Luxembourgish nationality

The conditions and the process are on the Luxembourgish nationality page (in French). Technical terms are explained in the glossary (in French).

What are the conditions for naturalisation?

Being an adult, having lived legally in Luxembourg for at least 5 years (the last year without interruption), passing the Sproochentest, attending the course or passing the Vivre ensemble exam, and meeting the good-character requirements. Both exams are therefore required, unless you are exempt; some option cases do not require them. Check your situation on Guichet.lu.

I work in Luxembourg but live across the border. Can I apply?

Naturalisation requires at least 5 years of legal residence in Luxembourg. Other routes, called option, exist for specific situations, for example a Luxembourgish parent or grandparent. Check your own case on Guichet.lu before you start preparing.

Can I be exempt from the Sproochentest?

A medical exemption can be requested from the Minister of Justice, with a certificate from a medical specialist. After at least 20 years of legal residence, the option route requires a 24-hour Luxembourgish course. The pages we consulted do not provide for an exemption based on age as such.

Where do I submit the nationality application?

In person, before the civil registrar of the municipality where you live, with the required documents. Signing by proxy is not possible.

How much time and money should I plan for?

The Minister of Justice decides within 8 months of the application. The naturalisation procedure is free; some documents may have a cost (copies of certificates, foreign documents), and registration for the Sproochentest costs €75.

Topic 4

The voice corrector and practice

How you practise on my-sproochentest. See also the voice corrector page (in French).

How does the voice corrector work?

You answer out loud. Your answer is transcribed, then marked on the 4 criteria of the exam grid (vocabulary, morphosyntax, phonetics, task achievement) and on the overall assessment. You get a mark out of 100, 3 priority corrections and a model answer read by a Luxembourgish voice.

Is the voice corrector’s mark the same as the exam mark?

No. It is a practice estimate, calculated on the same grid. On test day, only the INLL examiners mark you. The phonetics mark is indicative: it is based on clarity and fluency, not on a detailed analysis of every sound.

Do you keep my voice recordings?

No. We ask for your consent before the first recording. The audio file is deleted as soon as the mark is produced; only the transcription and the marks stay in your history. Details in our privacy policy (in French).

Do I need a special microphone or an app?

No. The microphone on your phone or computer is enough, and everything works in the browser. Choose a quiet place to record.

When does the Sproochentest pack open?

Soon. We do not give a date until it is certain. Leave your email address (form in French) to be notified.

Is the site available in English?

Partly. These pages are in English, and every Vivre ensemble practice question, its hint and its explanation can also be read in English (as well as Portuguese and German). The online course, the student area, the mock exams and checkout are in French. The Sproochentest exercises are in Luxembourgish, as in the exam.

How are your Vivre ensemble mock exams built?

40 new questions in the same split as the exam (10/20/10), a 45-minute timer and no help. The result comes at the end, by area. The mock exams are in French. See the mock exams page (in French).

Topic 5

Prices and the content of each pack are on the pricing page.

Is it a subscription?

No. You pay once and you have access for one year. After one year, access ends: nothing is renewed or charged. If you still need to practise, you can buy a pack again.

How do I pay?

When does my access open?

Can I move up to the Nationality pack?

Yes, once it opens, at the same time as the Sproochentest pack. What you have already paid is deducted from its price.
